X Factors
Fremantle – Aaron Sandilands: Sandilands did not make much of an impact in his first game back last week, but don’t expect the champion ruckman to stay down too long. He could be crucial given West Coast strength in the ruck department.
West Coast – Josh Kennedy: The Coleman Medal leader looms as West Coast’s best hope of turning around the round 1 Carlton Mid Derby result. With McPharlin out, the job on the Eagles’ sharpshooter will fall to Zac Dawson or Alex Silvagni.
Key Match-ups
Zac Dawson v Josh Kennedy: Dawson will probably line up on the in-form Kennedy and can go a long way towards helping Fremantle win the four points by shutting him down, but he’ll need a lot of help up the field from the forwards and midfielders.
Zac Clarke v Nic Naitanui: Two of the most athletic ruckmen go head-to-head on Sunday. Both have had compromised starts to their seasons because of injury, but they have been picking up form. Clarke in particular has been excellent in the absence of Sandilands and Griffin this season, but Naitanui can be a game-changer.
Lee Spurr v Mark Lecras: Spurr has been getting the jobs on the dangerous small forwards this season, and Lecras could be next in line on Sunday. The Eagle has been unusually inaccurate this year, but he is as classy as they come and could be very dangerous if he brings his kicking boots on Sunday.
Darren Glass v Chris Mayne: With MacKenzie likely to play on Pavlich, Glass could be the one to get Mayne, who has become a vital cog in Freo’s forward line.
Dream Team
Fremantle: Michael Barlow has been Freo’s Dream Team star this season. He won the Ross Glendinning Medal in round 1 with 126 fantasy points and averages 109 against West Coast.
West Coast: Chris Masten is in good touch recently, scoring 100s in five of his past six games. He had 39 disposals against Adelaide last week.
Keys to victory
Freo will be happy if: The midfielders and forwards pressure the Eagles’ midfielders into low quality forward 50 entries. The last thing Freo wants is Josh Kennedy and co to receive excellent service because the West Coast forward line is among the best at converting opportunities to goals.
West Coast will be happy if: Its brilliant ruck combo of Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui get on top of Clarke and Sandilands. From there, West Coast will hope to capitalise in the clearance department, in which it ranks third in the AFL.
THE SIX POINTS from afl.com.au
1. This will be the 38th clash between the sides and West Coast holds the advantage winning 21 games to 16.
2. After the Eagles won 17 of the first 22 contests from 1995-2005 the Dockers have been the better side since, winning 11 of the last 15.
3. West Coast has struggled to score against Fremantle recently, failing tokick 100 points in each of the last 12 contests.
4. Fremantle remains the number one ranked defence this season, conceding only 68-points per game. West Coast is ranked 12th with 91 per game.
5. West Coast has been a strong clearance team this season, ranked third in the AFL averaging 40.6 per game. Fremantle is ranked ninth, averaging 37.7 per game.
6. It will be an interesting ruck contest on Sunday. Nic Naitanui (10) and Dean Cox (95) are the first and seventh ranked ruckman in the Official AFL Player Ratings. Zac Clarke (276) and Aaron Sandilands (326) are the 19th and 21st ranked ruck men.
