An honour to witness retirees says Lyon
Ross Lyon considers himself fortunate to see three of his former players line up for the last time
Stephen Milne, Justin Koschitzke and Jason Blake have all announced their retirements from the AFL.
If selected, Koschitzke will also play his 200th game, as will forward Adam Schneider.
Lyon coached all the retirees during his tenure at St Kilda from 2007-2011.
“For me, I feel fortunate that I’m going to be there to see their last games and give them a clap off the ground, because they’ve been wonderful servants,” he said on 6PR.
Under Lyon and his predecessor, Grant Thomas, the Saints enjoyed a prosperous era that saw the club play in five preliminary finals, two grand finals and a grand final replay.
“It was an era that ultimately didn’t deliver a cup, but went mighty close,” Lyon said.
“That group duly delivered and just fell short.
“Outside of the premiership (in 1966), it was the most successful era over eight, nine, 10 years in the club’s history.
“Those players should be admired and applauded off the ground by all the Saints fans.”
