Forward Mikayla Morrison has decided to call time on her AFLW career after five seasons on Fremantle’s list.

Morrison was selected at pick 30 in the 2020 AFLW Draft, debuted in round 5 against North Melbourne in season 2022a and played a total of seven games in purple.

The 22-year-old had a career-best performance in her second AFLW game in round 6 against Carlton, where she had 13 disposals, five tackles and kicked three goals – an effort that awarded her an AFLW Rising Star nomination.

An unlucky injury run saw Morrison miss 973 days of football, after the gun forward ruptured her left ACL in 2022, and her right in 2023, however she made an inspiring and long-awaited return in round 6 of the 2024 season.

After a minor setback with her knee saw her miss the first half of the 2024 campaign, Morrison played three consecutive games for the season.

A proud Noongar, Yamatji and Kija woman, Morrison also assisted in designing Fremantle’s Indigenous jumpers across multiple seasons, connecting the Club with her culture.

Head of AFLW Claire Heffernan praised Morrison on her achievements during her four years and five seasons at Fremantle.

“Morro is an exquisitely skilled footballer who unfortunately endured injuries that impacted her ability to play the game she loves, however her influence off the field has been immense,” Heffernan said.

“As a young Indigenous woman, she has shared so much of her culture and has helped educate and connect the playing group and AFLW program during her time at Fremantle.”

Heffernan said the resilience and perseverance shown by Morrison was incredibly inspiring.

“Morro has shown grace and tenacity in the face of adversity, particularly after returning to play after such an extensive time in rehab,” Heffernan said.

“She will leave an indelible mark on the program and will always be part of the Freo family.”
