Madi Scanlon has praised fellow defender Emma O'Driscoll for helping to elevate her confidence on-field, as Fremantle look to clinch back-to-back wins to start their 2024 campaign against Adelaide on Sunday.

Scanlon told SEN WA earlier in the week how she has enjoyed playing alongside O'Driscoll, as the pair prepare to line up together for a 16th time on Sunday.

“She (O’Driscoll) brings so much value to our team and I’m very happy to be working alongside her in defence,” Scanlon said.

“She makes me ten times the player I was before I came to Freo.

“She’s been such a big contribution to the way that I play and even just my confidence on the field as well.”

Praising the backline, Scanlon touched on how much defender Ash Brazill has brought to the side since she arrived earlier in the year.

“I grew up watching her play netball, so to have her on our team now is like having one of your sporting idols and now I get to play alongside her, which is very incredible.

Speaking to Brazill’s week 1 efforts against Essendon, Scanlon said the former Pie brings an immense amount of leadership to the side.

“She just took intercept mark after intercept mark, and lots of spoils – her performance was just outstanding,” Scanlon said.

“She just doesn't stop talking on field, which we absolutely love.

“We're very lucky to have that kind of level of leadership and experience in our back line because she's such a great guide for the younger players and I guess newer players like me.”

Ruck Mim Strom notched her 50th game last week, with the 22-year-old breaking the record for the most hit-outs in an AFLW match (48).

“I just feel like she's got the wisdom and the experience of someone well beyond her years,” Scanlon said on Strom.

“Her ability to just kind of tap it into the right spot (is amazing).

“Also her ability to pick up ground balls and she's blocking for the mids, she's got quick hands out – she's just completely versatile and she just blows my mind.

“Every time I see her on the field, I'm like ‘wow’ I can't believe this is my teammate.

“She’s just such a great player to have on our team – we really love her.”

Scanlon said how proud she was of the overall team contribution to the week 1 win and revealed the side’s focus moving forward.

“I think we're just very happy with our overall performance, team contribution as well as some pretty standout stars on the field as well,” Scanlon told SEN WA.

“We're still focusing on our consistency across the four quarters, but really nice to just start off the season with a win and especially away from home.”

Scanlon said the side are ready to put their pre-season efforts on display against the Crows.

“We're going to go in and be prepared for a really tough game, but we're willing to fight for it,” Scanlon said.

“I think we're ready to prove to everyone how far we've come this preseason and what we're really capable of.”

Fremantle take on the Adelaide Crows this Sunday 8 September, 3.05pm WST at Fremantle Oval.
