Blustery conditions weren’t enough to stop Fremantle from running away 43 point victors in a dominant display at Windy Hill.

Twelve points up at the final break, the Fremantle side put the foot on the throat with five consecutive goals in the final term to start the season with a big win away from home.

Club debutant Gabby Newton said Freo had contributors all over the ground on Saturday afternoon.

“It was awesome to be able to absorb the challenge of Essendon and be able to play our brand of footy,” Newton reflected post-match.

“I thought we had so many great individual performances, but as a team, everybody contributed and played their role, (which) was incredible to see.

The travelling Freo side took their time to adjust to conditions, going goalless in the first quarter and if it wasn’t for the calm experienced head of recruit Ash Brazill the Fremantle side could have been tailing by more than eight at the first break.

“It was swirling! It was hard to read at times,” Newton reflected on the conditions.

“In the first quarter our backs were absolutely incredible – that wind was a gale force and to be able to absorb that and only conceive a goal in that quarter was incredible, so they were a solid unit back there.

“She (Brazill) was calm, composed. She didn’t seem to lose a battle across half back, she was so good.

“I think the things everybody else sees, like the intercepts and the winning a one-on-one contest is great, but her talk and communication on the field and her encouragement is the thing we value most with her.

“As a teammate, she was just absolutely incredible today and she’s someone that you want to go to war with, so to have her is just incredible.”

As the second quarter began, Fremantle took control of the contest, utilising the wind to pack on four consecutive goals and take the lead thanks to the Irish forward duo of Áine Tighe (four goals) and Aisling McCarthy (two goals, 23 disposals).

“All the Irish girls and those two (McCarthy and Tighe) especially, I couldn’t speak more highly of them,” Newton said.

“Aine (Tighe) has about the whole of the Essendon team hanging off her and still manages to either half the contest or win.”

After half time the Purple onslaught refused to slow down, as Fremantle ran away with the game thanks to their repeat inside 50s (40-21) and relentless pressure at the contest.

“I think just staying anchored and then being able to absorb the contest. We knew they were going to come out hard, so we wanted to be able to absorb, but then also not give in,” Newton said.

“We want to capitalise on our efforts, and we didn’t want to give an inch and I feel like we did that.”

A five-goal final term saw the Fremantle side do just that as they pushed the margin to 43 points, the Club’s fifth-largest winning margin in its history.

Fremantle will now travel back to WA to face the Adelaide Crows in round two in the Club’s first home game of the season.

“It will be so good,” Newton said.

“The vibe at Freo Oval, especially just recently having the smoking ceremony, I feel like it’s going to become hopefully a fortress for us.

“We really value and want to display our best footy there, so extremely excited for our first home game. Everyone get down!”
