Fremantle AFLW senior coach Lisa Webb has credited her Fremantle side for a strong contested effort after defeating Essendon by 43 points at Windy Hill.

“It was really pleasing – probably the most exciting thing is we had a lot of contributors today,” Webb said in her post-match media conference.

“We’ve been talking about that in pre-season. Obviously, we don’t have Ange (Stannett) and Turbo (Kiara Bowers), but I thought that type of performance shows we’re all chipping in and we’re on the right track.”

Windy Hill lived up to its name, with blustery conditions keeping the traveling Fremantle side goalless in the first term before a dominant second half saw the Freo side earn their fifth biggest winning margin in the Club’s history.

I thought they (Essendon) were really good in the last 5-10 minutes of each quarter so I challenged the girls and I think you could see in those last few minutes Áine Tighe, Gabby Newton, Aisling McCarthy, with a minute thirty to go, they were just ruthless,” Webb said.

“It’s something that we pride ourselves on – consistency in four quarters.

“We’ve still got a lot to improve on, but it was a pleasing start.”

Talking on a number of her new recruits, Webb was full of praise for the experience and talent that has been added to the playing side.

“She’s (McCarthy) pretty incredible that girl, she’s just got that fierce determination,” Webb said.

“I knew she was ready when I walked into the breakfast room this morning. She knows her role, she’s really clear on that and she can execute a big moment so we’re really lucky to have her.

“I thought Braz (Ash Brazill) was exceptional.

“Juddy (Kara Antonio) kept reminding me of how impressive she was down back.

“Just that left foot as well. We haven’t had a left footer before, we’ve really tried to work on our left foot, but she’s just so natural at it.

“She’s a great leader. I’m just really proud of how she can stay composed, and she did that consistently for four quarters.”

Fremantle will now face the Adelaide Crows at Fremantle Oval on Sunday 8 September in the Club’s first home game of the season, a challenge Webb expects the playing group to be ready for.

“We’ve got to reset after this. Obviously, we enjoy being away, and then we get home to our Freo family, make sure we’re really consistent this week and getting back to work,” Webb concluded.
