Sam Switkowski has revealed what he and his teammates will do in the lead-up to the Club’s must-win clash with Port Adelaide on Sunday.
“Generally speaking, we can’t think too much about those other games during the week because there is nothing we can do about those results,” Switkowski said during his Tuesday morning media conference.
“It’s unfortunate that our fate is not necessarily in our hands anymore; we do need to rely on some other results.
“I’ll put it down to individuals to process it how they want to. Some who usually watch the footy might want to tune in and watch (the other games) but personally, I won’t be tuning in and watching anything.
"I’ll just be focusing on what I need to do on Sunday against Port Adelaide.”
Fremantle will take on Port Adelaide in the final home-and-away game of the AFL season, meaning the Club will know by bouncedown of Sunday’s clash whether the results of Carlton, Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn mean the Club has the chance to play for finals or not.
Fremantle requires one of those three Clubs to lose their respective matchups, and then must beat Port Adelaide to jump into the top eight and continue on in season 2024.
“It won’t serve me well to ride any sort of emotion from those footy games, and regardless of the position we are in when we get to our game - whether we are fighting for a spot or not - we’re still going to approach the game in the same way and fight right until the end to get a win,” Switkowski said.
Speaking on the scenario where Fremantle makes the top eight, Switkowski said the team would not be looking past the current challenge in Port Adelaide but was confident in the team’s ability to challenge in September if given the opportunity.
“I have absolute faith in this team that we can beat any other team on any given day,” Switkowski said.
“We’ve shown that this year. I’ve got a lot of confidence we can beat any team.
"Not looking too far ahead, like I said, we’ve got to focus on Port Adelaide this week and see what happens, but absolutely we’ll be really excited at the opportunity, and if we do get to play finals, we’ll use that momentum from the weekend to be really confident going forward.”
Fremantle and Port Adelaide will bounce down at 4:10pm WST at Optus Stadium in the Club’s Member Thank You round, where the Club will pay thanks to the record number of devoted members who have shown their support throughout 2024.
