Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has said the group have taken learnings from Sunday’s narrow defeat to Essendon, but have already shifted focus to the Club’s vital clash with Geelong in round 22.

Reflecting on Sunday’s narrow defeat to the Bombers, Longmuir said that despite Essendon’s final quarter surge to come from behind and snatch a narrow one-point victory, the playing group reflected on the whole game and not just moments.

“Across the whole game it wasn’t the way we wanted the game to look, and it isn’t the way we want to play our footy,” Longmuir said.

“We got a bit reactive to them (Essendon) and we play our best footy when we are proactive and playing our way, backing ourselves and trusting ourselves. It’s a good little reminder of that.

“It doesn’t matter if it's team defence, offence, stoppage, we like to work together and there are moments throughout that whole game where we didn’t do that well enough.

“It’s a six day break, we need to invest all our focus into Geelong and I’m confident the players have already done that.”

The last time the Club faced Geelong at Optus Stadium was in late May of 2023, well over a year ago, with Longmuir confirming the Club would be prepared for a Geelong team well known for throwing different looks at opposition sides.

“Their forward mix is really dangerous…coming up against Geelong they do throw a lot of different stuff at you,” Longmuir said.

“We’ve got to try and negate some of that but we’ve got to try and not get caught up in too much of that either and play our own game.

“Like most weeks it’s a balancing act but Geelong do throw some different things at you.”

The senior coach confirmed it would be a race against the clock for the availability of breakout key forward Josh Treacy after he sustained a heavy collision late in the game at the weekend.

Longmuir said he believed the 22-year-old had avoided any significant injury but would wait on further medical advice before making any decisions on whether Treacy would play on Saturday.

“He’s got a collision injury, there are some reports going around that it’s significant but it’s not significant,” Longmuir said.

“He’s going to be touch and go for this week.

“He’s getting some further information, and we will make a decision… we haven’t given up hope that he’s going to be out there (on Saturday).”

Treacy has kicked 45 goals for the season and sits equal fifth in the Coleman Medal race with three games remaining.

Fremantle currently sits in sixth place on the AFL ladder, just four points behind the second-placed Brisbane, and four points ahead of the ninth-placed Essendon.
