Fremantle’s midfield ran riot in the 50-point win over Melbourne in the Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly presented by South32 on Sunday afternoon at Optus Stadium.

The clash saw the midfield unit win 47 clearances (second highest total for the year) and restrict the Demons to just 16 for the match, to post a 31-clearance differential (Freo's highest differential for the season) as Hayden Young, Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong went to work.

“When you’re getting your hands on it, it allows you to go a little bit turbo with the way you create your movement and look for channels to get out of stoppage,” Longmuir said at his post-match media conference.

“You’ve still got to do the work, and hats off to the mids, they did a great job.

“Joel Corey and I thought last week (against Hawthorn) we probably weren’t as on the front foot at stoppage as we would like to be, we wanted to be a bit more aggressive in there and play our way a bit more.”

Hayden Young (28 disposals, 11 inside 50s, nine score involvements, eight clearances) time in the midfield has seen the 23-year-old evolve the midfield unit and free up teammates in a move Longmuir has enjoyed seeing develop.

“I think Youngy’s (Hayden Young) impact in the midfield starts with his contest, his size and his ability to get after the opposition and compete being that other big body, he helps Andy (Brayshaw) and the other three in there,” Longmuir said.

“That’s where it starts, and he’s had impact on that front since he came into the midfield.

“Now, he’s evolving his offensive game and finishing his work off.

“He’s given us a different look with his left foot and his ability to come out the front.”

Coming off a stunning 92-point win over the Demons earlier in the year in round 12, Fremantle came prepared posting their second highest score of the year (highest also set against the Demons) to propel the Club back into the top four to set up a thrilling home RAC Derby clash with the Eagles next week on Saturday 27 July at 6.10pm.

“We’ve got a six-day break, so we’ve got to move on pretty quickly,” Longmuir said.

“It’s hard to win in AFL footy, so we’ll sit in this win for a bit, and then we’ll turn our attention to West Coast when we need to.”
