Fremantle forward duo and Starlight Ambassadors Michael Walters and Bailey Banfield have praised the efforts of the Freo family for coming together in the Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly presented by South 32, to raise over $420,000 (so far) in a ‘more than football’ effort.

Speaking on the Final Siren podcast post the 50-point win over the Demons on Sunday afternoon, Walters and Banfield thanked the Purple Army for their generous donations.

“For us as ambassadors to go and see these kids in hospital and bring a smile to not only their faces but the families as well, it’s something we enjoy doing and I’m glad it gets a platform like this so everyone can be aware of it,” Walters said.

“We love our Freo family, and they support it so well every year,” Banfield added.

“The jumpers are pretty awesome and to raise over $400,000 is pretty awesome.”

The efforts see the Club, and all involved, reach the historic milestone of over 2.5 million dollars since the inauguration of the Starlight Purple Haze game.

“We’re here to entertain and put smiles on people’s faces and there is no better face to put it on than these young kids,” Walters said.

The afternoon saw Walters wind back the clock to his dazzling best as the veteran forward booted four goals of his own, his highest amount for the year.

The 33-year-old was unwilling to take credit for his individual performance, rather crediting the team and roles the playing group focuses on as the reason for his success.

“We’re here to play our role and to stick to it and it’s showing," Walters said.

“Look at our win-loss record, look at the way we are playing, it’s not all about touches, it’s not all about goals, it’s about getting the win and all of us playing together as a unit.

“I’m just here to play footy and here to enjoy it.

Four Fremantle forwards kicked over three goals (Walters, Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss, Sam Sturt) in a game that saw Fremantle's rapid, clean ball movement and ability to repeatedly get players free over the top pay dividends on the scoreboard.
