Fremantle veteran Nathan Fyfe was at his best at the SCG on Saturday, in a role running with Sydney star Isaac Heeney.

Fyfe finished with 23 touches and an equal game-high eight clearances, and quelled Heeney’s influence around the ground in Freo’s thrilling one-point win over the Swans.

“The universe works in funny ways,” Fyfe told Fox Footy after the game.

“To play on one of the best, in-form players in the comp you can’t win the battles, but if you can win the war and contribute that’s what’s most important.”

The midfielder was quick to maintain a focus on the bigger picture when talking with Fox Footy’s Cam Mooney after the final siren.

“One win doesn’t make a season, but you want to build momentum and build belief,” Fyfe said.

“I feel like an away win against an in-form, top of the ladder side is going to do great things for the confidence we have in our group and our program.

“It’s a testament to our coaching staff and our program, setting us up during the week so that we can execute based on effort and I thought, professionally speaking, it was a pretty good effort today.”

Fyfe’s role in the win was highlighted in the team stats sheet also, where the two sides were even for inside 50s (54) for the day, but Fremantle won the stoppage clearances 17 to 28.

And as for that finish… Fyfe summed it up perfectly.

“It was a Hollywood finish wasn’t it, a really important win,” he said.

“Ten in a row they’ve won, a professional organisation we have such high respect for, and to be able to come up here without our skipper and come away with a win is fantastic.”

Next up for Freo is a Saturday night clash against Richmond at Optus Stadium. Tickets on sale now through Ticketmaster.
