A 24-point loss, is there a lot of frustration from that one?
It was a tough one, we didn’t start as well as we would have liked. I thought the girls worked into the game. The one thing I can honestly say is I was proud of the girls' effort to want to work through things. We addressed some things at half time and I was proud of that effort, but it’s always disappointing to lose.
Was Walyalup trying to force a really contested style of game on Geelong?
Not really, we wanted to use some of our Irish players - who have some really long kicks and can drive their legs and get out the back of Geelong at times. It was difficult and we didn’t play the fundamentals as well as we could. The game just got away.
Speaking of Irish players, Aine Tighe was outstanding again today?
She’s a great player. Some great contests today and went back with the flight. We know what she’s going to do. To do it week-in-week-out against basically the best defender is pretty impressive. I’m really proud of her as I am with a lot of the players.
Airlie Runnalls has been quietly consistent for you on the wing, does that come down to her work rate?
It’s more trying to get it to our outside runners at times. We do have some really strong contested players but being able to get the fundamentals right and get it to our runners on the outside has been difficult at times. She’s played some good games on the wing and also in a half forward role as well.
Where does Walyalup go from here? You’re 3-4 now. Are finals still in the conversation?
We don’t look ahead too much. Every single game that we’ve got and every game we’ve had this year, you don’t know…there’s a lot of growth in the completion. We verse St Kilda and we know they’ve shown some great composure. I watched them play the Bulldogs and they’re a really skilled team. There’s no team you can underestimate and we expect that every single week. We’ll just look to the next round.
The Club has travelled quite a bit this season, has it had any impact on your ability to show up every week?
I don’t think so. We love it as a team. We really enjoy the opportunity to travel together so that’s not something that’s holding us back.
You’re playing as Walyalup this week and next and you’ll wear your Indigenous jumper next week against St Kilda. All staff are also wearing the hibiscus flower for the Stolen Generation. It’s a big occasion for the Club?
It’s really exciting next week we get to wear our Indigenous jumpers at home. We’re really excited to do that as well as celebrating what the hibiscus flower means to us. We didn’t have Morro (Mikayla Morrison) travelling with us this week but we’re really excited to celebrate with her and our other players next week.
