Fremantle have secured a vital part of their future with young gun forward Jye Amiss signing an extension through to the 2029 season.

The four-year deal is on top of Amiss’s existing contract that runs until 2025, effectively committing for the next six years after this season.

Drafted at no.8 in the 2021 National Draft, Amiss has been a revelation at Fremantle in 2023, kicking 29 goals from 14 appearances.

The 19-year-old currently leads Fremantle’s goalkicking by four, ahead of Michael Walters, while excelling in a key forward role that is notoriously difficult for the AFL’s young players.

Amiss said it was an ‘easy decision’ to secure his future with Fremantle.

“I love the Club and I love the people that are here,” Amiss said.

“It was an easy decision to stay here for a longer period of time. It's a good time for us to take the Club forward.”

Amiss has shown his strength on the lead and in front of goal in 2023, scoring 21.5 from set shots this season.

In the past two weeks, he has also impressed at ground level, kicking four majors from general play where he has crumbed and snapped a goal.

“That's something that I want to add to my game, being a dangerous ground level player,” Amiss said.

“With my height, I think it is going to be a big thing. Onwards in my career, I want to bring different aspects of my game and improve that while building on the strengths that I have as well.”

Amiss isn’t the only tall forward showing promise at ground level who is committed for the long term, with Luke Jackson also locked in through to 2029.

He said he was eager to be a part of Fremantle’s forward future with Jackson and fellow tall forward Josh Treacy.

“’Jacko’ and I take bits of each other's games and put into ours,” Amiss said.

“It’s going to be exciting in the years ahead to just work with him over the pre-seasons.

“Josh and I get on really well. We played a couple of games at Peel last year and we’re now playing in the AFL team together as well.

“The more games we play, the more confident we’ll get with each other. You start to learn different things from each other and I think we're going to keep improving.”

Head of Player Personnel David Walls said Amiss was already exceeding the expectations that come with being a top 10 pick.

“What he's doing for his age for young key forward is so rare,” Walls said.

“The calibre of key forward that he is, is very hard to find. He's producing as a second-year player at 19, he's still so inexperienced but showing so much.

“He's got such a great attitude, great character and work ethic. He wants to be a really good player in the competition and he's exactly what we've been looking for.

“It's exciting to see where he can get to in the next five or six years. We had high hopes for him, but to do what he's doing at this stage is exceeding expectations.”

Walls highlighted that a player with Amiss’ varied skillset can be hard to stop.

“He's not a one dimensional key forward, he gets his goals in three or four different ways,” Walls said.

“He can take a pack mark but he's also a very good hit up player on the lead.

“As we've seen in recent weeks, he's good at ground level where he can pick up and snap and bring others into it as well.”

Walls highlighted Amiss’ dedication to Fremantle as a reason behind the long-term extension.

“One thing that came through and conversations with Jye and Paul Peos, his manager, they emphasised that he's loving his time and he wanted to repay the faith that the Club had shown in him. That was at the forefront of his decision making,” Walls said.

“I think it's brilliant for both the Club but also for Jye. The Club's taken a leap of faith in Jye with an early pick and then extending it out this far.

“Jye was very mindful in all our discussions that he really wanted to repay the Club and commit long term.”

Amiss joins fellow 2021 draftee Matthew Johnson by confirming a contract extension this week, with Johnson locked in until 2026.
