An emotional, yet measured Lachie Schultz expressed his frustration following a difficult 70-point loss to GWS at Giants Stadium on Saturday.
Schultz was one of a number of forwards who were unable to impact the scoreboard on Saturday, as the Giants dominated contests all over the ground.
Sam Sturt (two), Michael Walters, Caleb Serong and Nat Fyfe were Fremantle’s goalkickers on the night while the likes of Jake Riccardi (five) and Toby Greene (four) scored heavily for GWS.
Schultz labelled the result as one of the most disappointing of his career, as Fremantle now fight to stay in touch with the top eight to play finals.
Freo currently sit in 12th place with a record of 6-7, with 10 games still remaining in the 2023 home and away season.
“It was very disappointing. A frustrating night. It’s not us, it’s not our footy and it’s hard to take in at the moment,” Schultz told 6PR post-game.
“That’s one of the most disappointing losses I’ve been involved in my time at the Club and we just need to regroup and fix our errors and fix what’s wrong, and do it quickly.
“I’m sure we can, I’ve got full confidence in this group. We’ve showed that our best is good enough, especially this year. I couldn’t be more frustrated.”
Schultz addressed the frustration of another slow start that saw the Giants jump out of the blocks.
Fremantle were kept goalless in the first quarter for the first time this year, managing only 0.2 as the Giants raced to a game-defining 23-point quarter-time lead.
“We always talk about our starts and how we want to impose ourselves into the game,” Schultz said.
“It all starts at the contest and we just got absolutely smashed at the contest.
“We’ve got to look at the way we prepared and our mindset going into today, and the way we’ve come out of the bye.”
“We’ve had two slow starts in two weeks and it’s frustrating, and disappointing.
“We’ve just got to re-group and re-gather and figure out what we’re doing wrong, and we need to do it quickly.”
