Jordan Clark said the Fremantle playing group have labelled their performance as ‘embarrassing’ following a 70-point defeat at the hands of GWS at Giants Stadium on Saturday.
Fremantle were on the back foot from the start, recording a goalless first term while the Giants kicked four majors.
Down by five goals at half-time, the Giants piled on eight second half goals to Freo’s two as GWS’ clearance and inside 50 dominance set up a difficult task for Fremantle’s defensive group.
Clark said the performance had failed to meet the lofty expectations held internally within the Club.
The rebounding defender was among Freo’s best, with 22 possessions, eight marks, three inside 50s and 523 metres gained for the match.
“We were hoping for a much better result as a team and the word we used to label it as a group was embarrassing,” Clark said.
“We’ve got high expectations as a group and to dish that up today was far below par.
“It’s certainly not us and everyone in the Club wears that.
“We are looking to bounce back quickly and fix things up.”
Winger/forward Michael Frederick was a late out from the clash with an ankle complaint.
It opened the door for forward Sam Sturt to come back into the starting 22, while midfielder Neil Erasmus assumed the tactical substitute role.
Sturt was Fremantle’s only multiple goalkicker with two, while Erasmus tallied 10 disposals, two marks and two inside 50s after being injected into the game just prior to three-quarter-time.
“Ras has worked really hard in the WAFL and the one thing about him is that he is a quality person and a really good player,” Clark said.
“He has kept his attitude and kept working hard the whole time and never dropped his bundle once.
“It’s great to see him get his opportunity through hard work and a good attitude and he took it with both hands I thought.
“Sturty was obviously a late in and it’s a tough gig when you’re not really preparing to play but you know that you are sort of a chance.
“He impacted the game as Sturty does and got shots on the board. It would have been nice to convert a bit more from everyone, but Sturty was very good.”
Clark said Sean Darcy’s hopeful return from a hamstring injury next week would be important, as Fremantle eye off an opportunity to bounce back against Essendon at home next weekend.
“Sean is a quality ruckman and him and Dogga (Luke Jackson) work hand in hand together,” Clark said.
“We do miss him and he is a big presence out there given how good of a player he is. It’ll be nice to get him back.
“Every week is a big game, we will go home tonight and prepare very strongly for the game ahead and, hopefully, bounce back.”
