Fremantle’s increased dare and pace against Brisbane has impressed Justin Longmuir, but the Senior Coach said a tune up of the fundamentals is required.

A clear focus on moving the football through handball was evident, although Longmuir believes his players didn’t quite get the mix right between hand and foot in the early stages.

Against an experienced Brisbane side, Fremantle’s younger outfit aimed to create scoring opportunities through faster play but fell short on some execution.

“You can’t come up here and be conservative against a really mature team,” Longmuir said.

“We wanted to the take the game on. We got the balance a little bit wrong in terms of handball and kick early and we didn’t execute the basics enough.

“I liked the dare we showed and the intent we showed with ball in hand, when our handball game is up and going it created a lot of opportunities for us.

“We probably over did it at times, but I liked the fact that we showed a bit more dare.”

Longmuir said that it would be a focus of training throughout the week to continue to instil confidence into the playing group.

“We have to keep giving confidence to our players and educate them on the way we want to play. We always want to take the game on between the arcs,” Longmuir said.

“Our issues with our ball movement is when we get deep entries and we are getting locked in our back half. We can’t keep getting stuck in the back half like we have in the last couple of weeks.

“We have always tried to push opportunities to bounce out of when we win the ball back, so we will continue to coach that.”

Defender Jordan Clark agreed that simple ball use and uncontested marking were two key areas that stifled Freo’s chance to execute on opportunities created through quick play.

“We wanted to move the ball a little bit quicker when we could, and I thought we did that,” Clark said.

“I thought there were times today where we looked really good, but there were a few basic skills that let us down, which was probably the story of the day.

“Our basics and our ball use and marking…let us down today.

“Obviously, we hoped for a better outing than we got, there are some promising signs throughout and a lot that we can work with.”

A return to the home deck of Optus Stadium against Hawthorn next weekend will see Fremantle play in their annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly supported South32.

Clark encouraged Fremantle members and fans to get to Optus Stadium and support the important work of the Starlight Children's Foundation.

“Hopefully we can get as many fans down there as we can,” Clark said.

“We are not playing the way we would like to but I can assure you that we are all really trying hard and are pretty keen to bounce back.

“Obviously, the Starlight Foundation is a great cause and it’s a really special game for our Club and something that we do really well.”
