Fremantle draftee Jae Flynn couldn’t be more excited about being thrown into the deep end when she commences her AFLW career at Fremantle.
The 24-year-old was drafted at no.17 in the AFLW Supplementary Draft on Tuesday evening after an impressive start to her WAFLW season with East Fremantle.
Her first official obligation is on Thursday night, where she’ll come into the Club to meet her new teammates and senior coach Lisa Webb, and potentially take part in a training session.
Despite having already trained with Fremantle last year as a potential top-up player, she admitted to feeling the nerves about returning to the Club.
“I’m pretty nervous but we’ll get over it!” Flynn said.
“Training at that high level pushes you to challenge yourself and you develop your skills that much more when you’re playing at that next level.
“My goal is to develop my skills and IQ of the game a little bit more, challenge myself to push myself in that way.”
Fremantle have slated Flynn as a potential wing or half back, and Flynn has experience playing all over the ground at the Sharks.
“I've moved around from the backline to the wing to the midfield,” Flynn said.
“I like to think I’m pretty clean on the ground with the ball, other than that, I like to set my players up to have a good run and get physical and bump a few other players.”
Flynn has close ties to football in Fremantle, with her grandad Wilson Onions playing 101 games for East Fremantle including being a part of their 1957 premiership, and is also an East Fremantle Hall of Fame inductee.
It means she's delighted to continue the Fremantle football tradition in her family.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be at Freo, purple is quite a nice colour so I’m glad to still be wearing it, but as a player,” Flynn said.
AFLW Senior Coach Lisa Webb said Flynn would be an asset on the wing.
“Jae is a really good winger and I have been really impressed with her ball use,” Webb said.
“Her game awareness is great and she has shown the ability to make some big tackles, but also her skills and ability to execute a role within a structure is really good.”
“She is a really good character and has a good set of hands.
“Jae has worked really hard on her game, is really good by foot and has a good read on the ball.
“She has also shown that she is clean below her knees and covers the ground well.”
