With a handful of big names dominating the narrative around Fremantle’s pre-season, Jaeger O’Meara has quietly put together a summer that should give Freo fans even more reason to be excited for 2023.

A surprise recruit from Hawthorn late in the Trade Period, O’Meara’s arrival was overshadowed by the blockbuster deal that saw Luke Jackson arrive at Fremantle.

And the 28-year-old joins a midfield headlined by MVP Andrew Brayshaw and fellow young gun Caleb Serong.

Assistant Coach Joel Corey has been especially impressed by O’Meara’s leadership, with the midfielder standing in as acting captain for periods last year at the Hawks.

“Jaeger has settled in nicely, he’s great amongst the group and helping us build something,” Corey said.

“He’s a quality person, a good character and has a wealth of experience.

“Not only is he helping to gel the group, he’s teaching other individuals how to do little things and big things.”

In Friday’s intraclub, O’Meara worked well with Serong and Will Brodie as the Purple midfield had the upper hand in the contest.

O’Meara feels he’s building nicely ahead of a fortnight of games against Adelaide and Port Adelaide before the season starts on 19 March against St Kilda.

“It was good to get the hitout” O’Meara said.

“I think my touch was reasonably good and it was good to get the kilometers in the legs as well.

“These intraclubs, you’re going as hard as you can but you’re also playing against your teammates, so you’re not wanting to hurt anyone.

“Our first match practice was pre-Christmas. We’ve been doing it for months now so I’m looking forward to next week and getting into some proper opposition and playing against Adelaide.”
