Fremantle’s playing group increased the intensity further on Friday, participating in their final hitout before next week’s pre-season fixture with Adelaide.

Teams were split into Purple and Grey, with the stronger fielded Purple side running out victors by six goals.

Midfield coach Joel Corey said the priority of the intraclub was to increase on-field chemistry ahead of challenging AFL opponents from next week onwards.

“There was a bit of a mix in teams, but it was mostly one-sided to the purple team,” Corey said.

“That’s the way that we thought we’d go, we tried to build a little bit of chemistry going into next week.

“It was a good hitout and the boys will be tired tonight, there was plenty of pressure, good energy through the group and we’re looking to build chemistry now going into playing AFL opposition.”

Luke Jackson was instrumental for Purple, his aerial and groundwork both equally as impressive, as he impacted plenty of contests over the field.

Caleb Serong oozed class and toughness throughout, arguably the standout midfielder of the day – James Aish joining him for a run-with role.

Jaeger O’Meara was full of praise for the 22-year-old and is eager to join him in the middle for Freo this season.

“Caleb was really good. He’s had a really good pre-season, he works extremely hard and it’s no surprise that comes out on gameday,” O’Meara said.

“He’s been leading really well, he’s an exciting teammate to have on your side and I can’t wait to play with him this year.”

Nat Fyfe booted three goals for the morning, as he continues to settle into his new role as a permanent forward.

The former skipper was strong overhead inside 50 and had moments of working up the ground to help drive his team into attack with clean entries to his fellow forwards.

“Fyfey had a pretty good day, the chemistry he’s got going with the forwards is growing,” Corey said.

“His repeat effort work, and he’s always a threat and a danger forward of the ball. He’s an extremely hard matchup.

“I’m looking from the outside (as midfield coach) but I think he’s really grown. If you think back to December to now, there’s been some leaps made and I think we keep looking forward to that continuing into the season.”

O’Meara agreed, ready to link up with Fyfe as the season progresses.

“He’s going to be a dangerous forward and when the ball was in his area, he’s quite hard to stop,” O’Meara said.

“If he doesn’t take the ball with him, he’s taking a body. He’s going to be really dangerous and I’m looking forward to getting a good connection with him going inside 50 and him kicking some goals for us.”

Alongside Fyfe, Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss continued to press their claims for round one selection, with two goals apiece.

As well as finding the scoreboard themselves, the pair were also instrumental in setting up goals for their teammates, with Treacy playing a part in Serong’s major, while Amiss set up Switkowski with a slick handball out of traffic for the final goal of the day.

“Josh was second ruck, he showed an improved level to handle that kind of role which was good,” Corey said.

“He had influence when he was forward. He’s done a lot of work over the pre-season and it’s good to see him getting some reward.”

Sebit Kuek had explosive moments, highlighted by his strong overheard marking and a blistering run-and-bounce play down the wing – before ending the day with three goals.

Lachie Schultz, Tom Emmett, Josh Corbett and Jack Sears (Peel) were amongst the other multiple goalkickers.

Sam Sturt’s physicality and pressure was once again on display with two significant run-down tackles.

Hayden Young (Purple) and Nathan Wilson (Grey) were the pick of the defenders for their respective sides with Young’s composure evident and Wilson’s impressive ability to break lines on show.

Wilson’s lightning pace featured heavily, with the rebounding half-back also slotting two goals in a near-complete performance.

“Willo played with great energy, he had good energy in defence and one of his strengths is he likes to run and he certainly showed that,” Corey said.

“He used the football really well today.”

O’Meara said that the dress rehearsal was over, with his teammates eager to square up against AFL opposition and get stuck into the season proper.

“We’ve been playing against each other for quite some time, our first match practice was pre-Christmas,” O’Meara said.

“We’ve been doing it for months now, so I’m looking forward to next week and getting into some proper opposition."
