Trent that was a hell of an effort, they just had a bit much in that fourth quarter with you guys having a depleted bench but you guys must be really proud of the gutsy effort you guys showed out there?
Absolutely. I think we’ve been competitive every week lately and to come up against Adelaide on their home deck. I thought Adelaide bought the heat as well, I didn’t think they’d take their foot off at all. So it was a really good effort by our girls. Three players down before half-time makes it difficult – especially with the class of Chelsea Randall, they can just keep going for those four quarters.
Just talk us through the injuries. What’s the diagnosis on each of them at this stage.
Gabby O’Sullivan was a dislocated shoulder, Janelle Cuthbertson an ankle and Sarah Wielstra was her knee. It’s not an ACL or anything like that. There’ll be more tests and we’ll see how all three of them pull up with scans during the week.
Kiara Bowers is good every week but she was particularly good today. Probably one of the better games anyone’s ever played in this competition.
29 touches, 19 tackles, 11 clearances. When we were out of rotations we couldn’t take her off the ground for a two minute break, we’d just put her in the goal square and she just made a goal or two down there as well. She was phenomenal. She’s been doing it off very little sleep the last couple of weeks with her son having a few minor medical problems but I think she got a good night’s sleep at the hotel last night and it paid off today.
Ebony Marinoff had a fair few in the first half, what did you do and how could you shuffle things considering your injuries. How did you try and curtail that?
Marinoff always gets a lot of the ball and always gets a lot of metres gained. So Nikki Gore was playing on her and we wanted her to limit her score involvements. The first half Marinoff – as good as she was – she didn’t have one score involvement so we thought we don’t need to change anything. Nikki had a really good third quarter on her – she went completely out of the game which gave us possession dominance and some clearance dominance. But in the last quarter, Marinoff lifted again. It’s just hard when you’ve got Hatchard, Marinoff and Randall in the one team.
Mathematically it's very hard for you to make finals, so how will you approach the final few weeks of the season and how do you keep progressing as a team considering your injuries?
After the Geelong game, we were so far back in terms of the footy we were playing, so finals at that point went by the wayside. We concentrated on improving week to week and we feel like we've done that every week since then and I think today was our best performance of the season so far. We just want to finish off the same way. We spoke after the game that we were really excited to play Collingwood, another top four team, next week, because we want to test ourselves. We want to be a team that is up challenging next year and the best way to do that is to play all the good sides.
