A trade for Luke Jackson is on Fremantle’s agenda but not at the top of their to do list as the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period kicked off on Monday.
It’s expected to be a busy trade period for the Club, and Jackson looms as their biggest target, with the 198cm Demon requesting a trade back to WA.
But any potential trade is likely to be done later in the period, according to Head of Player Personnel David Walls.
“It’s still very early, it’s still early days,” Walls told Trade Radio.
“(Luke’s) indicated that he’d like to come to WA and we’d love to have him.
“That’s on the agenda today, to catch up with Melbourne to see if we can progress that any further.
“He hasn’t actually chosen Fremantle but he wants to come back to WA. It’s basically up to us to work with the Dees to get the deal done.”
Jackson has been dubbed a ‘football unicorn’ by analysts, due to his potential to play a number of roles including ruck, forward, inside midfield and on the wing.
“I think that’s the beauty of Luke, he can play anywhere,” Walls said
“He’s versatile, he plays in the ruck, I think that’s where he’s played his best footy to date.
“He also has the ability to go forward and become more of a focal point down there.
“He’s showed at under 18 level to potentially go through the midfield like (Geelong’s) Mark Blicavs in the Grand Final.”
Fremantle not giving up on Logue, but have a backup plan
Fremantle head into the trade period holding picks 13 and 72, but that hand is set to be bolstered with a number of players requesting trades, including Blake Acres, Griffin Logue, Rory Lobb and Darcy Tucker.
Walls said Fremantle were reluctant on trading the contracted Rory Lobb and would not be reliant on facilitating that trade to get Jackson to the Club.
“We’ve got our first pick this year, first pick next year. That’s where 90 per cent of your currency is, your first rounders,” Walls said.
“We have a few other things on the go, so I think we’ll be able to get there.”
