Fremantle’s forward fortunes have turned significantly since the bye, with Matt Taberner firming for selection for Saturday’s semi final against Collingwood.

After being short for tall forwards late in the home and away season, Taberner will use Wednesday’s main training to put his hand up for selection after kicking 2.2 for Peel in the WAFL against Swan Districts on Sunday.

Young key forward Jye Amiss is also set to keep his spot, leaving Longmuir to decide if versatile tall Griffin Logue will return to the backline with Freo possibly selecting three key forwards in Taberner, Amiss and Rory Lobb.

Longmuir said Taberner had told him he was eager to make his return for the final.

“He is pleading his case. He wants to play but he understood the reasons (he wasn’t selected) last week,” Longmuir said.

“He’s been at the Club for a long period of time and he’s been searching and preparing for these types of situations.

“He desperately wants to be out there and contribute but on the flip side, he definitely doesn’t want to let the team down and as match committee, we’ll always put the team first.

“We’ve got a decision to be made on selection and what our forward line looks like.”

Longmuir was impressed with how Amiss played in just his second game at AFL level and was keen to keep the 19-year-old in the team.

“He’ll put his hand up for selection,” Longmuir said.

“I thought he competed really well in aerial contests, which will hold him in good stead this week.

“I imagine he will only grow off last week. He handled the occasion really well and he’s a really mature player. He’ll get to work and it will be a great experience for him.”

The big question for Longmuir is where Logue will fit, with Freo also set to name a tall backline in Alex Pearce, Brennan Cox and Luke Ryan.

Longmuir said Logue hadn’t been considered for the medi sub.

“It probably hasn’t come to mind as medi sub,” Longmuir said.

“He can play at both ends of the ground and he gives us really good flexibility pre-game and in game.

“There will be a few scenarios getting thrown around this arvo.”

Longmuir confirmed that Nathan O’Driscoll would be fit to play despite appearing to hurt his ankle against the Bulldogs.

“He rolled that ankle but that’s pulled up really well and he got a bit of a corkie,” Longmuir said.

“We expect him to push through that today and put his hand up for selection.”
