While thrilled with Michael Frederick’s impressive run-down effort on Ed Richards in Saturday’s elimination final, Senior Coach Justin Longmuir says the whole team deserves praise for the turnover that led to Michael Walters’ third goal of the evening.

Frederick’s desperation was the epitome of Fremantle’s hunger to come back from a 41-point deficit and win by 13 points to advance to the semi finals.

Longmuir told 3AW that the tackle would be the first thing highlighted in team review, but not just to praise Frederick.

“That tackle is going to look even better with behind the goals vision,” Longmuir said.

“The reason why Richards took so long was because we covered off so well and he didn’t have any options coming outside of defensive 50. That bought time for the tackler.

“We love the fact that Freddy just went for it, but it’s the work behind the ball to cover the exits and give Freddy time - that was first class and that will be the front of the queue for review (on Monday).”

Frederick went goalless in the clash but reiterated how Fremantle’s small forwards work on impacting the scoreboard in different ways.

“That was our focus in the second half, just have pressure coming through the front in our midfield and getting forward of the ball and pressuring the Dogs’ defenders,” Frederick said.

“We feel if we’re not on the scoreboard, we’re bringing our tackling pressure.

“As a small forward group we were connected.

“As long as you’re putting pressure on, getting involved, using each other and connecting well, I feel that holds us really well mentally when on the field.

“That got us good looks going forward. If it’s not goals then it’s tackles and pressure and we appreciate the tackles as much as goals.”
