Michael Walters has spoken on the weekend he will remember for ‘the rest of his life’, after celebrating his 200th game milestone on Saturday against GWS.

Walters played a pivotal role in Fremantle’s win, impacting the scoreboard with an equal game-high three goals to go along with seven marks and six score involvements.

The Fremantle favourite was joined in Canberra by his wife Marnie, his mum Martha and children Addison, Laila and Mackenzie for the milestone occasion.

The 31-year-old said that he loved having his family alongside him for the weekend.

“This is probably something I will look back on at the end of my career, but for now this is more so for my family and the people that were there through my whole journey,” Walters said.

“I play footy for my family and to have them here for my 200th and for them to get the experience of an away trip has been massive.

“I love the way that they came through the banner with me and it’s something I will remember for the rest of my life.

“That’s why I love this footy Club, the coaches, media and all the admin and players have been unreal towards my family and definitely made them feel welcome.

“My girls were shy, but they softened up towards the end!”

Walters was able to soak up an important moment pre-game, presented with his 200th match guernsey by retiring champion David Mundy, before being chaired off the ground by Mundy and skipper Nat Fyfe post-game.

“(Dave is) someone that I grew up watching and idolising, and he is a massive Freo man just like me and ‘Fyfey’ are,” Walters said.

“To have Dave present me with my jumper was unreal because I’ve been through a lot with Dave and played a lot of footy with him and to have him and Fyfey carry me off - I couldn’t think of anyone better suited to do it.”

On top of his three majors for the day, the 200-gamer also brought the forward pressure, most notably with a brilliant chase down tackle and goal to bring GWS’ second-quarter surge of 10 straight inside 50s and four consecutive goals to an end.

Walters feels one of Fremantle’s strengths in 2022 has been the even spread of pressure and scoring across the forwards unit, with the crafty forward pleased to get on the end of multiple goals on Saturday.

“I feel like my pressure has been there all year, although the goals haven’t always come my way,” Walters said.

“It’s good that we aren’t just relying on certain players to go out there and kick bags of goals, everyone is bringing that pressure and I feel the goals stem from that.

“It was my turn to kick a few today and in previous weeks it’s been players Lachie Schultz and Michael Frederick and guys like that.”
