Fremantle’s latest Glendinning-Allan Medallist feels there’s something extra special about the playing group that he hasn’t experienced before in his time playing football.
Darcy was the unanimous winner of the best on ground award in a 24-point win in Saturday’s RAC Derby, and he spoke emotionally about his teammates, particularly retiring legend David Mundy.
"Something that I talk about is the love that we have for each other, which is something that’s not really shared too much,” Darcy told ABC Grandstand.
“We’re genuinely excited for everyone to do well. It’s something I’ve never felt, this love, even everyone firing each other up before the game."
He said Mundy was all business after he was treated to rapturous applause when exiting the ground in an emotional farewell to the Purple Army.
“It was pretty emotional. We won a game and seeing Dave run around afterwards,” Darcy said.
“With Dave, as soon as we got in the rooms he was like, ‘no, this isn’t done'.
“He’s asked for six wins, we’re down to four, so off we go.”
Darcy gave the highest possible praise to Mundy as a person and thanked him for everything he’s done in helping the ruckman develop.
“He’s just a super person, not just a footballer. He’s probably a better person than he is a footballer, and he’s a really handy footballer!” Darcy said.
“He just cares so much, he puts so much work into us. With me, he’s just been great, I’ve had him for six years, so it’s going to be weird not having him here next year. He’s unbelievable.
“He’s professional, he’s a family man. He ticks all the boxes.”
