Were you a bit nervy in that first quarter or did you always think it was in hand?
I wasn’t nervy because I expected what we got from West Coast. They’ve been really competitive, they’ve brought really good pressure and we knew they would bring good physicality so the game panned out like we would have hoped in the second half but we didn’t go into the game not expecting what they brought in the first half.

What do you think separated you in the end?
It comes down to field position. I thought our contest was pretty solid all night and when we got the game played in our front half we were able to lock it there and that third quarter is the sort of footy we want to play and I suppose field position separated it in the end.

What did you say to them at quarter time, there was a bit of mayhem after tagging, fights and  50 metre penalties. Were you trying to calm them down?
Not really. They would have done it themselves because we came into the game knowing what they would bring. Knowing that they would bring physicality. You only have to watch West Coast the last month, since the bye, they’ve been really physical with their pressure and their contest so we knew what we were getting ourselves into. And the players were able to do that, we remained really connected and at quarter time they had already done it.

Was this a good game for you? Do you walk out happy with the performance at this point in the year?
I think a real honest, competitive game is what we wanted and needed. We expected that, especially when the conditions came we knew it was going to be a real slug fest and it was nice to get over the line. Whether we needed it or not time will tell but I thought we stuck to our task really well and stuck to the plan and it was good to get the result.

Were you pleased with the way the guys handled the conditions?
We’ll review it. I thought we were good in the contest most of the night. I thought even though the tackle numbers were heavy towards their way I thought our pressure we stuck at pretty well and I thought we were a little bit more direct in the conditions than what we have been. And we didn’t try and chip it around and go lateral and be safe in the conditions. So I think we took a step forward om dealing with wet weather.

What did you make of Sean Darcy’s performance?
I thought he was huge. He plays larger game time than Nic Naitanui so we knew we’d get a look with Sean and their second ruck which we thought would be a benefit for us. He just gave us a bit of predictability around clearance all night and really allowed our mids to get on the move and get proactive. I think he’s starting to get a bit of his marking back and he’s starting to look confident in aerial contests again and backing himself and getting around the ground well so he’s been up and about for a few weeks now.

ALL THE HIGHLIGHTS

Was that a confidence thing?
I think it was a bit of method, maybe a bit of work rate. He just looks a bit more aggressive these last few weeks which, when he plays his best footy he’s aggressive.

How is Rory Lobb?
He’s sore but we don’t think it’s anything significant. I was proud of his efforts after he got injured to halve some contests and remain in the game and keep working his way through it. So we will wait and see but hopefully it’s alright.

So are you expecting him to miss next week?
No I’m expecting him to play.

So the 12 day rule, where the doctor is meant to predict that they’ll miss 12 days as part of the substitute rule, do you think that doesn’t apply anymore?
He’s busted his shoulder so we will have to see how it comes up. Players have played plenty of times after they’ve been subbed out. You could tell that he was carrying his arm around so he’s got an injury. We know the injury, he’s been carrying it for three weeks. He just got a stinger on it and couldn’t go on tonight but we think he’ll be alright after seven days. I don’t want to give too much away for next week.

If there was no Lobb and no Taberner what does that mean for you next week?
I don’t know, I’m trying to enjoy this game first. I’ll worry about that probably when I get home. It’s not ideal and I’d love Lobby to play next week but I haven’t crossed that bridge yet. Hopefully we get the skipper back and we had a good performance at Peel today where we had a good win against a side sitting close to the top of the ladder. We’ll review that game and see who deserves an opportunity and put our best team out there. It’s all you can do isn’t it?

With the Lobb injury, how sore is it when he plays and how limited is he?
It depends. Last week he probably wasn’t too limited. There was a specific incident tonight where there was a marking contest and he’s extended and got his arm wrenched which aggravated it. When you see a player out there carrying their arm you just want to protect them and that’s why we subbed him out. He’s a fast healer, he played a week after he hurt it the first time, I think from memory, so fingers crossed he gets up.

And then do you just manage it and he plays through the pain?
Yes, he’s pretty good at it to be honest. He doesn’t let on when he brings injuries into games and he pushes through it pretty well but we just thought when he was carrying that arm a bit we just thought that it was best to get him out of there.

Was there a reason you waited until so late to sub him out of the game?
Yes because he is 205cm and we needed a contest forward of the ball. Like I said I was really proud of his efforts to keep competing, sometimes with one arm. He drew a shot on goal, a free kick on the outer side and we just needed that. I didn’t feel like the game was won at any stage. He was important to us but the docs went out and checked him and it was decided he couldn’t go on anymore. So he battled as well as he could for as long as he could and then we needed to get him off for his own welfare?

What happened in the first quarter with the melee. Was Caleb Serong upset with anything?
I’m not sure, I’ll have to catch up with him. I think he does that week in, week out for every player and our club. He’s pretty tight with Andy Brayshaw so maybe he thought Andy was getting a little bit of attention and he didn’t like it. I’m not actually sure why the melee started or why he got his jumper ripped but I would have to ask him.

00:56

Do you think Andy got enough support from the umpires with the attention he was getting?
That’s hard for me to say on game day. I would have to review the tape. We will look at it, nothing stood out if that’s what you are asking.

With just the one home and away game left do you need to get Nat Fyfe out there next week to play?
We don’t need to but if he’s fit to play he’ll put his hand up for selection. We’re not going to risk him but if he’s right to go he will play.

So he doesn’t need to a hit out before finals?
I’d like him to but if he’s not declared fit we’re not going to put him out there and risk him because if you injure yourself at this time of year and have a repeat injury to that hammy, your season’s almost done. So if it’s not this week then we’ve got a bye and a WAFL game in the bye. So we’ll look at that, but all indications are we were holding him back this week so we’re pretty confident he’ll get up next week.

How did you feel at the end of the game watching Dave Mundy – it was a pretty emotional moment for the Club and for him?
Yes that’s a good summary. It was emotional and I was really proud of our supporters for sticking around and showing Dave off the way they did. It was a special moment in our Club’s history and the player deserved that moment. He’s done a lot for our footy club and deserves to be sent out the right way. So that was special.
