Nat Fyfe will have surgery this week after suffering an injury to his left leg during Sunday's loss to Carlton at Domain Stadium.
General manager of football operations Chris Bond said scans had confirmed that Fyfe had fractured the fibula in his leg, the same injury he incurred in last year's preliminary final.
"Nat is travelling to Melbourne for the surgery, after which we will be taking a cautious approach to his recovery and rehabilitation phase," Bond said.
“At this stage we have not set a time frame for his return. It is very disappointing for Nat, the club and our members and supporters but our focus is always on a player's long-term health and wellbeing."

Bond confirmed that defender Michael Johnson would also undergo surgery as a result of an injury suffered in Sunday’s game.
“Michael suffered a hamstring tendon injury in his right leg and a tear to the medial ligament in his right knee,” he said.
“We will be better placed to advise on Michael’s availability after he has undergone surgery and completed his recovery phase.”
