As Fremantle defender Michael Johnson prepares for his 200th AFL game on Friday his thoughts are with injured teammate Anthony Morabito.

First quarter firepower

Morabito is facing more time on the sidelines with a long term knee injury and has managed just 26 games since coming to the club at pick 4 in 2009.

Ross Lyon told 6PR on Monday that Morabito is facing an uphill battle to play any football this year, as he waits for bone bruising to settle in his knee.

Johnson backed the 23-year-old to return to the field.

“I’m lucky enough to play 200 games but to see players lose their career due to injury is tough, but it is AFL footy,” Johnson said.

“The good thing with Anthony is he’s never let it get to him.

“He’ll want to keep going, he’s young and got plenty of footy still in him.”

Johnson revealed he had worked with Morabito during the pre-season, teaching him to play as a halfback.

“It’s been really tough for him,” he said.

“He was really positive over the pre-season.

“I worked really close with him…trying to help him play the drop-off/half-back role.

“He’s just unlucky he’s pulled up really sore through his knees.

“He’ll work really hard to strengthen his body and make an impact next year.

“You don’t want players like that, with a lot of talent, to go down with injuries.”
