Defender turned forward Griffin Logue is continuing to learn his craft in Freo’s attacking half, and has leant on the likes of Matt Taberner for a helping hand.

The 24-year-old kicked his first goal in 1870 days and then followed up with a second in Freo’s 14-point win over Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.

For the second week running, Logue provided a different look up forward, completing seven marks and bringing plenty more of the ball to ground on his way to a two-goal and 13 disposal performance.

Logue’s forward role was initially carved out as a nullifying task to Melbourne’s Steven May in last weekend’s impressive victory over the reigning premiers.

However, after the All-Australian defender went down in the first quarter following a head knock, Logue’s presence up forward impressed enough to see the 194cm key position player retain his forward status against the Lions. 

“It’s a different kind of look, I think I had one crack at going forward in my first year and have now got the opportunity to swing forward. I’m really enjoying it for sure,” Logue told 6PR.

“I reckon I’ve got a fair bit to learn, athleticism has kind of carried me so far…I’ll act like a sponge for sure.

“Initially, it was just for a role to sit on Steven May and nullify his aerial presence and after he went down early I jumped on Jake Lever a bit.

“I’ve kind of taken it with both hands and it’s a simple focus for me which is make a contest and don’t let them get a mark.

“It’s definitely a bit better celebrating a goal than a spoil in the back half!”

Logue leaned on key forward Matt Taberner for advice in the lead-up to the Lions, with Taberner missing from the side after being subbed out with a back injury in the win over the Demons.

“Tabs was really helpful and just gave some kind of tips about getting around the ground and losing them in the contest,” Logue said.

“I guess as a back you always have to be there and look to defend first, but he said you can get forward and look to expose them there.

“He was actually really helpful, he sent me a nice text today.”

Logue credited the strong depth and availability of Freo’s squad as they look towards a win over Hawthorn next Saturday to take a 10-3 record into the bye.

“We have been trying to stamp our foot on the competition for a while over the last couple of years and missed out last year,” Logue said.

“We built into this pre-season really well and the younger boys really drove that in the Brayshaw’s and Serong’s…it’s a really good group to be a part of.

“44 doesn’t go into 22 and we never have really had that luxury over the past couple of years through injuries.

“With the availability and depth we have got right now we have been really lucky, the boys have been really good at being connected.”
