Fremantle has made just one change for Saturday’s Starlight Purple Haze Game against Gold Coast, with Nick Suban replacing Lachie Neale.

The emergencies for the annual charity match will be Zac Clarke, Garrick Ibbotson and Neale.

Suban was forced to miss round 1 because of a one-game suspension carrying over from last year’s AFL Grand Final.

The ban also left him unable to play for Freo’s WAFL affiliate Peel last weekend, and the Thunder has the bye this round.

Freo general manager football operations Chris Bond said that was not the reason Suban had been picked.

“He’s in because of the work that he’s done in the pre-season,” he said.

“His pre-season practice match form was good and he was able to play the previous weeks.

“Nick’s only missed that one week and he’s trained very well.

“His form on the track has warranted him being selected to play.”

Neale was the sub in the 70-point win over Collingwood in the season opener. Bond said the South Australian recruit was a great young player.

“He’s had a really good pre-season and he just needs to continue that form on the training track and get some good sessions into him,” he said.

“We’ve got no doubt that he’s got a big future at the club.”

Bond said Neale and the other players who were not playing AFL this week would have a training session over the weekend.

“They’ll train pretty significantly,” he said.

“We’ve got a Friday night game following this weekend so we’ll have to work through that as well.”

Saturday’s game is the 12th annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly supported by Fremantle Ports. Bond said it was always a very special occasion for the club.

“An enormous amount of money has been raised and I know all the players and staff really embrace it and get involved, and none more so than our supporters as well,” he said.

“It’s a great day for the club and it’s a terrific match.”
