Fremantle have finalised their Covid-contingency list ahead of the 2022 season, selecting 20 top-up players on Monday.
Six of the players are from Fremantle’s WAFL-alignment club in Peel, while a further eight were selected through the nomination of two priority players from each of Freo’s Next Generation Academy aligned clubs (South Fremantle, East Fremantle, West Perth and Claremont).
The remaining six spots were filled via WA draft nominations, with six WAFL players selected by Fremantle to complete their top-up list.
Players from the contingency list can only be used throughout the 2022 season if less than 28 AFL-listed players are available for selection.
Fremantle’s Head of Player Personnel David Walls said it was great recognition for the WAFL talent selected.
“The WAFL is a really strong competition and that’s been reflected in the number of guys that we had come in and train with us over the summer. They acquitted themselves really well and showed they are not far off the level,” Walls said.
“Obviously, we aren’t sure how it will all play out, but if we do have to call upon any of these guys I feel they are ready to go.
“I think it’s great reward and recognition for them as well, particularly some of the guys that have been stalwarts of the WAFL competing against AFL guys weekly and working full-time, it’s exciting for them.
“If we have less than 28 players available for selection, then we will be able to tap into this contingency list.”
