Fremantle’s NAB AFL Women’s round one fixture has changed with the Club now taking on West Coast in a blockbuster RAC Derby season opener under lights at Fremantle Oval on Saturday 8 January at 5.50pm.
Following WA’s recent border restrictions to Adelaide and Queensland on Friday as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the AFL has switched Freo’s round one (Adelaide) and eight (West Coast) opponents to ensure there are no disruptions to the commencement of the 2022 season.
The team will now play the Crows in round eight at Fremantle Oval on Sunday 27 February at 12.10pm for Indigenous Round, which replaces the scheduled RAC Derby that was fixtured to be played at Optus Stadium on Saturday 26 February.
FEATURED PART ONE | With Ange Stannett
The round one RAC Derby will be the first-ever AFLW twilight match played at Fremantle Oval and provides WA footy lovers with the opportunity to kick off Freo’s Summer of Footy at Fremantle Oval with tickets to the game going on sale in the new year.
West Coast defeated Freo by 10 points in a pre-season clash before Christmas, making the upcoming AFLW RAC Derby one to watch. Fremantle have won all three in-season games against their cross-town rivals.
Fremantle could debut an exciting group of new draftees for the round one clash, with Irish recruit Aine Tighe and Ann McMahon putting their hand up for selection after showing promising signs in the pre-season match against West Coast and have both been feel-good stories this pre-season after missing last season due to injury.
The fourth AFLW RAC Derby will also kick off Hayley Miller’s first season as captain after taking the reins from inaugural captain Kara Antonio.
Any fans who already purchased tickets to the original round one clash against Adelaide all refunds will be managed by Ticketmaster.
Ticketing information for the round one clash will be released by the AFL next week.
