New Fremantle recruit Will Brodie will have the chance to reconnect with some former Vic Country teammates in Sean Darcy and Darcy Tucker, as he prepares to hopefully line up alongside them in purple next season.

Brodie was Fremantle’s first player trade of the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, securing the former Sun and picks 19, 61 and 69 in a deal with Gold Coast.

The big-bodied midfielder has previously lined up alongside Darcy and Tucker prior to his AFL career starting with the Suns.

“I played a bit of footy with Sean Darcy at Vic Country under 18’s,” Brodie said.

“Obviously, that was a while ago now but I did get to play footy with him. I also played a little bit with Darcy Tucker as well when I was a bottom age 18s player.

“It was a long time ago now, but there’s a little bit of a connection there, which is good."

Brodie said watching the meteoric rise of Darcy in 2021 has been exciting to witness, fresh off his first Doig Medal win last Saturday.

“I just can’t believe how much he’s developed and come along,” Brodie said.

“He’s a genuine star of the competition at the moment, so it’s super exciting for him and for the footy Club.

“Hopefully he can put it down my throat a bit!”

Brodie said his phone has been running hot throughout the day after news of his trade to Fremantle broke.

One of those people to reach out over recent weeks is his new senior coach, Justin Longmuir.

“My phone has been pretty busy! I’ve had heaps of people reach out and message me,” Brodie said.

“The players and people from the football Club have been in touch, it’s awesome.

“I have spoken to Justin a few times and he seems like a super approachable coach who I’m really excited to work with.”

The 23-year-old is poised to fit in well with Freo’s midfield mix of youth and experience, and believes he can utilise his best attributes to add value to the Fremantle line-up.

“It’s a pretty big move, but something that I can’t wait to do. I want to get over there, get settled in and get started,” Brodie said.

“I feel like my strengths as a player is my contest and clearance work.

“I feel my speed, power and size gives me the ability to impact in the air and on the ground.

“It’s something I feel I can bring as a player, hopefully, I can do that at Freo.”
