Ed Langdon's matchup against good friend and former teammate Lachie Weller was a personal highlight in Freo’s 28-point win against Gold Coast at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
The pair arrived at Fremantle in the 2014 National Draft and the game was Weller’s 50th in the AFL after playing 47 games with the club from 2015 to 2017.
Weller was traded to the Suns in the 2017 NAB AFL Trade Period in a deal that saw pick no.2 head to Freo.
“I managed to sneak in a few words with him, it’s great to see him out there,” Langdon said.
“We obviously got pretty close in our few years at Freo and I was lucky enough to line up on him on the wing.
“It was pretty special to be honest, I think I’ll remember it for years to come.”
The 22-year-old Langdon stepped up on the wing in the absence of injured teammate Bradley Hill, delivering nine inside 50s and laying five tackles in an impressive performance.
Langdon paid tribute to Hill for playing a significant role in his development since the former Hawk's arrival at the club in 2017.
“It’s obviously a big loss with Bradley out,” Langdon said.
“He plays a huge role for our team with that outside run.
“Everything he’s taught me over the pre-season and last year in particular has been a huge help. I’m just happy to keep improving and keep trying to master the game he plays.”
Langdon added that the win was extra special coming in the annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, which raises funds for seriously ill children and their families.
“It’s a great occasion, the Purple Haze game, I know I can speak on behalf of all the boys when I say we absolutely love playing it,” Langdon said.
“It means a lot to the boys, a lot to the families out there and a lot to the kids.
“It’s really special and it was great to get the win and great to see all the fans there today.”
