When Lee Spurr appears on hit92.9’s Heidi, Will and Woody, it’s almost like he’s part of the gang.
But while Spurr has been a regular guest on the station for more than a year, the club’s long-standing relationship with hit92.9 goes back much further.
This Sunday, when Fremantle open their season against Geelong at Domain Stadium, Fremantle will celebrate their 500th AFL game. On Thursday morning, Spurr delivered in a celebratory cake to thank the station for being with the club from game one.
“I just want to say that hit92.9 have been with Freo since the start and they’ve just signed on for three more years,” Spurr said.
“So, hopefully, we can have another 500 games together. Thanks for your support guys!”
With the 500th game celebrations coinciding with Fremantle’s annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly supported by Fremantle Ports, ‘Woody’ dug deep to make his own #PurpleHazePledge – while having a dig at Spurr in the process.
Spurr’s tendency to get cuts on his head during a game has been a long-standing joke with hit92.9’s breakfast crew, and ‘Woody’ took his banter to a new level.
“Spurry if you end the game on Sunday without a bandage on your head I’ll give $50,” Woody said.
“But if you end the game with a bandage on your head, I’ll give $100 to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.”
Spurr also announced his pledge for the game, roping in a club legend that has played his fair-share of Purple Haze games.
“I’ve pledged $200 if the big maverick (Matthew Pavlich) can get out on the oval in his suit with his leathers, and kick a goal from the fifty,” Spurr said.
“He can roost a footy, I’ve sent him a little text message that if he puts a barrel through I’ll double it.
“Hopefully a fair few of the fans will get there early so we can get a bit of atmosphere going.”
The club also delivered a ‘500’ cake to The West Australian, who are Fremantle's only other sponsor to be with the club from day one.
Tickets are still available for Sunday's match through ticketmaster.com.au or by calling 1300 135 915.
