Athletic defender Griffin Logue says he’s loving playing alongside teammate Alex Pearce, crediting the 197cm key back for making life easy for the rest of Freo’s defence.
Despite being teammates for the past five years, it was the first time Logue and Pearce have played together in the same team as Freo ran out 12-point winners against Collingwood on Saturday at Marvel Stadium.
With Pearce able to take on the likes of 211cm Mason Cox and 205cm Darcy Cameron, it meant Logue and Luke Ryan weren’t tied to shutting down one particular player.
Logue racked up a career-high 11 spoils while Ryan had nine marks.
“We only realised a couple day prior to the game that it was our first AFL game together, to finally get that game away was good,” Logue told SEN WA.
“It’s a lot better having big ‘Moose’ (Pearce) down there. He can wrestle with the big fells and I don’t have to play on those bigger blokes.
“Also with Lukey down there, when he’s up and about, it makes it a lot easier for someone like me. We’re just looking to get a bit of chemistry together, play together and build off that.”
Logue said he didn’t have any issues in his return from a concussion sustained in round 12 against the Western Bulldogs.
“My body felt great, I had great confidence coming and it was definitely good to contribute,” Logue said.
“It makes it all worthwhile when you get the four points. I really enjoyed it.”
Logue was hopeful that Nat Fyfe would return from a shoulder injury on Saturday against Carlton, saying the captain made his teammates ‘walk taller’.
“He’s a hell of a player and in terms of his body, he probably knows more about it than anyone else,” Logue said.
“That’s why I think the docs and the club gave him the responsivity to make the call on himself and I’m sure he won’t get it wrong if he comes in this week or next week or whenever.
“It will be good to have him back, you walk a bit taller when you’re running out alongside Fyfey.”
The clash against Carlton is set to be the 19th annual Starlight Purple Haze game, presented by South32.
“It’s a big game on the calendar for us as a club and me individually,” Logue said.
“I’ve been an ambassador for Starlight since I came into the club. It’s something that I’m definitely proud that I put my hand up for.
“It’s a big game and hopefully we can put on a show and get the win and at the end of the day, raise a lot of money for a great cause.”
