Fremantle veteran David Mundy stood up once again as Freo went into Saturday’s Gold Coast clash in the absence of skipper Nat Fyfe.
Mundy kicked two crucial goals to add to his 20 disposals, six clearances and a game-high eight score involvements.
Returning defender Alex Pearce said his teammates are always confident of Mundy’s ability to use the ball cleanly around goal.
“It’s great when you see ‘Barra’ with the ball in hand somewhere around the goals or passing it into the forward 50,” Pearce said.
“You just know that he’s going to find a target.
“Sometimes, we struggle to use the ball inside 50 and a few of our set shots hurt us, but when Dave gets the ball, you are pretty sure he’s going to kick it.”
Pearce’s return also coincided with two Fremantle debutants in Brandon Walker and Joel Western.
After playing alongside them for the previous month at Peel, Pearce said it was great to see the pair get their opportunity.
“I got to play with them over the last couple of weeks in the WAFL,” Pearce said.
“Brandon has been competing really well, and when he gets the ball in his hands to run and carry with the footy, I think he’s probably the fastest bloke in the team.
“He’s a really exciting player when he uses his speed.”
“Joel battled pretty hard today and had some good pressure moments.
“It’s just really good for them to get a game and a win under their belts.”
Experienced defender Reece Conca was also welcomed back into the Fremantle line-up, as he chalked up his 150th AFL game milestone.
“It’s great having him back, he is an older head for the somewhat inexperienced backline that we’ve got,” Pearce said.
“He plays a tough role on the dangerous small forwards and it was great to have him back.
“150 AFL games is a great achievement, so it was great to get a win for him as well.”
