A good narrative comprises of five elements – who, what, when, where and why.
Here is the story against Gold Coast, ahead of the teams’ meeting at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
Who – With Michael Barlow and Hayden Ballantyne added to what seems like an ever-growing injury list at Fremantle, and Matthew Pavlich rested ahead of his 350th game next week, the opportunity arises for some of the squad’s youngsters to gain senior experience against Gold Coast. The Suns aren’t without injury concerns of their own, with star midfielder Gary Ablett out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, and key players Dion Prestia and David Swallow sidelined.
What – A chance for redemption awaits Freo, as they face Gold Coast for the second time this season, with the Suns claiming victory at Domain Stadium in round two. It was the Suns first win over the Freo Dockers, and they will be looking to do the double, while Fremantle will be hoping they can build on the strong performance against Geelong.
Talking points ahead of Gold Coast
When – Saturday afternoon football in Queensland can be a warm affair, and this weekend’s game will be little different. The forecast for Saturday afternoon is for 24C and dry, which should produce a beautiful day for football.
Where – Fremantle have never lost at Metricon Stadium, but have twice won by a margin of just seven points. The ground will present a challenge for Fremantle’s midfield, with the width creating space, and allowing teams to build attacks. Freo’s midfield and defence will need to be alert to gaps opening up which could allow opposition players to lead into space.
Why – This game is important to both sides, with Fremantle looking for continued improvement off the back of the Geelong game, while Gold Coast are searching for their sixth win, after starting the season with three wins from their opening three games.
