Fresh off being voted in as Fremantle’s Best Clubwoman, defender Ange Stannett has signed on for a further two seasons with the Club.
Stannett’s signing marks Fremantle’s first signature of the 2021 AFLW Sign and Trade Period which commenced on Monday 31 May.
It comes off the back of an impressive 2020 campaign for Stannett, which saw her finish sixth at Fremantle’s Fairest and Best event just over a week ago.
The 24-year-old is eager to get started on season six of the AFLW competition as Fremantle look to build upon three consecutive finals appearances over the past three seasons.
“I’m super excited, obviously the last three years we have seen a lot of success as a group and as a Club,” Stannett said.
“After the season that we had in 2021 we will come back hungry, so I’m excited to see what we can do over the next two years.
“It was so unexpected (the Best Clubwoman award) but I was super honoured. Ever since I walked in here three years ago it has always felt like home, so it’s nice to give back in any way that I can.”
Stannett believes her teammates ‘can’t wait to crack in’ to the upcoming pre-season training period commencing in September ahead of a December start for season six.
“After the post-season reviews and the chats that we have had, it’s really exciting to hear what the Club is looking to do with our AFLW program,” Stannett said.
“It’s so great to bring the season forward to December and I think that the growth in the competition is going to be really exciting.
“Hopefully, it looks like some longer seasons, more teams and more fans in the years ahead, so that’s what it is all about.
Senior coach Trent Cooper, who also recently signed on for a further two seasons, highlighted the development of Stannett’s consistency and leadership qualities both on and off the field.
“Ange has been with us for three years and has played every game for us in that time after crossing codes from soccer,” Cooper said.
“She has done an amazing job for us over those three years and has become a really important part of not only our team but of our whole Club, as can be attested by her winning the Best Clubwoman award.
“People will see out on the field what she produces every week, and she is a consistent performer for us, but off the field she is always helping out across the Club.
“She is a valuable contributor and a future leader of this Club.”
