After a promising start, Fremantle were dismantled by West Coast in Sunday’s RAC Derby at Optus Stadium.
West Coast out-worked Freo after quarter time to run out 59-point winners, 20.12 (132) to 11.7 (73).
Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Jake Waterman (three goals each) exposed Fremantle’s defence, which was missing Luke Ryan and had Ethan Hughes (shoulder) and Heath Chapman (shoulder) playing hurt.
Hughes was replaced at quarter time by medical sub Taylin Duman.
ALL THE MOMENTS
Conversely, West Coast’s backline held their own despite missing Jeremy McGovern, Shannon Hurn and Tom Barrass, however Matt Taberner shone early with three goals – his seventh consecutive game with multiple goals.
The game was won in the midfield, with Nic Naitanui giving the likes of Tim Kelly (42 disposals, 14 clearances) and Dom Sheed (30 disposals) good service.
Andrew Brayshaw toiled for Freo in the midfield with another strong performance, leading Fremantle with 32 disposals.
David Mundy also had moments of brilliance with 29 disposals, five tackles, seven inside 50s and one goal.
The loss means Fremantle slip to a 4-3 record and sit ninth on the ladder ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Brisbane at Optus Stadium.
