Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy, powered by Tyrepower, kicked off their first phase of the 2021 program with an NGA derby at Lathlain Park on Friday.
Freo’s Peter Bell and Roger Hayden squads squared up against West Coast’s Nic Naitanui Academy in two well-fought out clashes.
For players aged under 14 years, the Peter Bell academy focuses on building a strong platform of basic skills, while the Roger Hayden Squad (15 years and under) looks to incorporate skill development in a contested environment.
Former Freo Docker Antoni Grover has taken over the coaching role of the Peter Bell squad, with an eye on developing the squad’s young talent.
“This is really the start of their 2021 program,” Grover said.
“We had a large squad today, but it was about everyone getting an opportunity…it was good to see the boys run out in the purple.
“There is some real talent there and the boys are passionate about football.
“The boys are still getting to know each other…we have only come together as a group for four weeks of training so far.”
Grover said it was great to have some familiar Fremantle names involved within the program.
“For me, it’s been really enjoyable to give back to these young boys who are coming through the system,” Grover said.
“We are trying to engage kids who may not have been involved in football before and those who have some talents that we can develop holistically as young footballers and young men.
“Roger Hayden is overseeing the program with Simon Eastaugh as well.
“From a coaching perspective, we also have Anthony Morabito, Jon Griffin and Jay van Berlo onboard.
“I certainly enjoy giving back a little bit while still being involved in the football club.”
