Peel Thunder have capitalised on a fast start to defeat Claremont by 11 points at Claremont Oval.
Despite the Tigers fight-back in the third term, Peel held on to finish 7.12 (54) to 10.5 (65).
Fremantle defender Griffin Logue said it was a four-quarter effort that gave them the win.
“We started off really well and we wanted to try and build through that and keep it going through the whole game,” he said.
“They fought back hard… and credit to them, but we just stuck to our basics of making sure we didn’t get pushed over with our effort and ball use and just went from there.”
The Thunder started off strong, leaving Claremont goalless for the first twenty-one minutes of the match before only three goals were kicked between both teams in the second quarter, as Peel took an 18-point lead into half time.
The Tigers fought back hard in the third term to reduce the margin to four points but a three-goal final term for the Thunder sealed the victory.
Logue said Fremantle forward Brandon Matera, who finished with three goals and 20 disposals, made a significant contribution to the win.
“It’s his effort and ability to willed himself to every contest… he did really well with that,” he said.
Logue said Fremantle ruckman Llyod Meek was strong around the ball, with a game-high 32 hit-outs.
“I think he stood up well… he’s a very strong player, I think he’s got a solid future,” he said.
“He’s got a few things to work on, as everyone does, but in terms of the battles of the talls, I think he’s winning.”
Fremantle midfielder Danyle Pearce bounced back from his omission from the AFL side with 30 touches, while ruckman Luke Strnadica was solid in the ruck with 28 hit-outs.
Peel Thunder will face West Perth next Saturday 9 June, at Rushton Park.
