Brilliant Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe wants to become a player capable of filling any role his team requires, be it in the midfield, forward line or defence.

The 21-year-old had a breakout season in 2011, but shoulder issues plagued him last year and forced him to miss 12 games from rounds four to 17.

When he returned to the side, Fyfe was instrumental in Freo’s advance into the AFL Finals playing in the midfield.

But he wants to become the type of player his coach could use in any area of the field that best suited the team.

“That’s something I’m trying to work into my game, the versatility to be able to play forward or back or as a midfielder,” he said.

Fyfe has grown 2cm since he was drafted in 2009, but more importantly, he has bulked up significantly to 89kg.

He said that was the playing weight he felt he needed to be at to compete with the bigger bodies in the AFL.

“It’s part of the gradual adaptation to playing as a midfielder in the modern game,” he said.

“You don’t want to be pushed around or bodied up, and being 89kg holds me in good stead.”

A skinny Fyfe came into the league as a high-flyer in 2010.

He doesn’t think his weight gain will hinder his aerial game too greatly.

“Jumping at 70kg is a lot easier that jumping at 90kg, but I think I can still run around and jump and I’ve still got all my movement,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s affecting me too much.”

In his first hit-out of 2013, Fyfe came on after quarter-time of Saturday’s trial game against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

He amassed 10 disposals (six contested), four clearances and a goal in the second quarter alone.

The Lake Grace product finished with nine disposals (11 contested) and six clearances.

Fyfe’s goal for 2013 is to continue playing his role for the team and stay out on the park 25 games.

While there are only 22 games that Freo Freo are guaranteed to play in, Fyfe won’t hide his desire to play multiple finals.

“All clubs talk about finals and we want to play finals,” he said. “It’s the reason we play.

“But that’s a long way away. We still have two pre-season games to go, let alone the main season.

“We know what we have to do before we get to round 1, and hopefully, we can sustain that for the whole year.”

Fyfe expected to play in Saturday’s NAB Cup game against Mick Malthouse’s Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

He said it would a valuable match against quality opposition.

“It’ll be a good challenge to see what they bring and what new structures and game plan they come with,” Fyfe said.
