WAFL Watch, with Steve Malaxos
The WAFL has provided several options for replacing injured skipper Matthew Pavlich
Standout performers in the WAFL, Daniel Gilmore and Kepler Bradley did the most to press their claims for a senior recall, according to development coach Steve Malaxos, but there are three other options open.
Malaxos said first-year player Tim Ruffles may be looked at after another impressive WAFL performance, while Marcus Drum has shown improved form over the last month playing forward.
Adam Campbell had a quiet WAFL game, but Malaxos said he was an option if the selectors go tall.
Bradley (27 possessions and seven marks) was Malaxos' WAFL performer of the week, and the coach said he would be discussed seriously at selection along with Gilmore (33 and 13).
Ruffles played his second half onball for Perth, the first time he has done so this season, and finished with 18 possessions and a goal.
He would be Fremantle's 10th debutant this season if selected for Sunday's Subiaco Oval clash.
"It was interesting when he went onball in the second half, he wasn't used to it but it forced him to really cover more ground than he would as a forward," Malaxos said.
"That was good to see. He's still trying to improve his fitness."
Casey Sibosado (groin) was out of action in round 14 of the WAFL and is in doubt for this week, while Chris Mayne (hamstring) and Brent Connelly (hip/back) were both withdrawn and will be tested before this week's fixtures.
Ahead of Thursday's selection, Malaxos shared his WAFL notes with fremantlefc.com.au.
Perth 10.10 (70) lost to South Fremantle 16.3 (99)
Marcus Drum
Started out on Josh Head and was a link between defence and attack for Perth, leading up as a centre half-forward. He worked well after half time with some good spoiling efforts. He had good periods and average periods and was a reasonable contributor in the end with 19 possessions and seven marks. He's been in better form over the last month or so, if he could find another notch to that that would be really good.
Tim Ruffles
He was quite good up forward before moving onball in the second half and winning some clearances. He was one of Perth's better players with 18 disposals and a goal. Some of his kicks could have been better, which would have made his play even more impressive.
Daniel Gilmore
He played well on the wing and across half-forward, with 33 possessions and 13 marks. He's getting big numbers for Souths by continually running, working to space and linking up through the midfield. Despite a lot of close attention his use of the ball continues to improve.
Josh Head
Played a reasonably good game across half-back and finished with 16 possessions and a goal for Souths. He played on Drum in the first half, which was quite a good duel, and he attacked pretty well. Had a couple of second-half goals kicked on him.
Ryan Murphy
Ryan had a quieter day with just 10 disposals and two marks. Bulldogs teammate Callum Wilson was in great touch, so often the ball would go to him or over Ryan's head. He had one of those days where he wasn't in the play a lot, but we're still looking for Ryan to improve his work-rate and get more involved.
Claremont 12.11 (83) d West Perth 10.9 (69)
Kepler Bradley
Kepler had a good game with 27 possessions and seven marks. He played mainly as an onballer and had spells on the wing and in the ruck. He won a lot of contested possession, and had 19 handballs – a lot of which were quite creative, bringing his West Perth teammates into the play.
Adam Campbell
Started brightly and looked like he was in for a good day, but just found it difficult thereafter. The windy conditions didn’t suit his style, but we'd be looking for a more consistent effort there. Finished with seven disposals, two marks and one goal for West Perth.
Jay van Berlo (reserves)
Jay's game was probably as good as we've seen for a guy coming in for his first game from such a long way back with injury. He played a half in the Falcons reserves and got through quite well, racking up 14 possessions and kicking two goals. He finished the game strongly and ran quite hard, so it was a good start for him.
Ben Bucovaz (reserves)
Started well onball and some of his penetrating kicks were really valuable for his team. Second half he drifted between onball and forward and he was quieter. We're just looking at building on his complete lack of a pre-season. We certainly want him in the Claremont league side – we just have to wait until fitness-wise he's ready to go.
East Fremantle 4.12 (36) lost to East Perth 12.13 (85)
Chris Hall
Started well for East Fremantle, but had a groin complaint which restricted him thereafter, so just an average effort after quarter time. We're monitoring that injury at the moment.
Hamish Shepheard
With Zac Clarke out of the East Perth side with us, Hamish was used as a back-up ruckman. He played probably half a game in total and all of that was in the ruck. He competed pretty well and did the job they wanted. We'd be looking for him to get more of the ball around the ground, but his role was to restrict the opposition influence in the ruck and he did that quite well.
