Fremantle forward Gabby O’Sullivan has credited the hunger and fitness of her teammates following an incredible comeback win against Carlton at Ikon Park on Sunday.
After a grueling summer working under high performance manager Kate Starre, the Fremantle players have the confidence they can run out any game.
O’Sullivan said that senior coach Trent Cooper’s three-quarter time address stressed that he believed Freo could overcome Carlton’s lead due to their hard work on the training track.
“(Cooper said) to keep going and to keep trusting that we would get those clearances from our mids. Just to keep running because we knew that they were getting tired. We just had to keep digging in and keep fighting,” O’Sullivan said.
“I don’t think we’ve played many games where we’ve had to come from behind like that.
“I’m just really proud of our group, how we stayed together and kept fighting all day and we didn’t once drop our heads.”
Freo kicked three goals in the space of 90 seconds through two goals to Sabreena Duffy as well as Gemma Houghton’s winner.
While Fremantle’s forwards were blanketed well by Carlton’s defence for most of the clash, O’Sullivan said with stars like Duffy and Houghton, the forward line could never be held back for too long.
“It’s what happens sometimes, you don’t really get much of the ball but those players (Duffy and Houghton) are so dangerous that when the ball’s around them things happen,” O’Sullivan said.
“They converted when it mattered and it was good that they could get on the score board.”
With 24 points from seven games, Fremantle sit on top of a congested ladder on percentage ahead of Brisbane and Collingwood.
Adelaide, North Melbourne and Melbourne round out the top six on 20 points.
O’Sullivan said Freo would have to fight to maintain their position with tough clashes coming up against fellow finals contenders.
“We have two really tough games for us coming. We have this week at Fremantle Oval against Melbourne, so if we can play the way that we have been and play our style of footy, we’ll be absolutely fine,” O’Sullivan said.
“We then have the Kangaroos to finish off the season. They’re another really good side, we didn’t get to play against them last year so we’re hoping we can show them what we’ve got.”
