Fremantle’s resilience was a standout feature of Saturday’s 17-point win against Port Adelaide, and their ability to respond in a hard-fought game was something the playing group prided themselves on, according to Tommy Sheridan

“It was a really resilient performance by the boys today,” Sheridan said.

“We just hung in there, and it was an arm wrestle.

“It was a really good, trademark Fremantle performance.”

The hard running defender praised Freo’s young backline for their ability to withstand the constant pressure applied by a talented Port Adelaide team.

“We have quite a young backline, a lot of us are from the same draft so it’s quite unique, and also having ‘Hilly’ (Stephen Hill) and ‘Collo’ (Sam Collins) back there (was great).

“We learnt some more things today from what they (Port) threw at us but we’re really happy.”

Freo's fierce mentality set the tone

Sheridan said his defensive role was assisted by Freo’s midfield and their ability to control the game when it mattered most.

“I thought we controlled the ball well,” he said.

“We got on top in the centre square bounces and when they got on top we stopped their run with our stoppage clearances and got it back on our terms.

“We just worried about our next moment, you can’t control the past so once they scored we just (had to) reset.”

While a thrilling win against a quality opponent was a good result in his 50th game, Sheridan said a win always tasted sweet and that going four in a row against Collingwood next week was now the priority.

“Whether it’s the 50th or the 49th game, they’re just as sweet,” he said.

“We’re all pretty proud. We were really steeling ourselves for three in a row and we’re really happy we got the chocolates and now onto Collingwood next week.”
