Caleb Serong was one of Fremantle's best in Friday's match simulation

Fremantle’s main training session on Friday morning featured four quarters of match simulation as they prepare for the 2021 season.

The match went for an hour and a half with short breaks after every quarter. Teams were split into two, Purple and Pink, and remained unchanged for the majority of the game.

Lining up for the purple team, Connor Blakely won the first centre clearance and combined with Andrew Brayshaw to work it forward for an early inside 50.

Matthew Taberner and Liam Henry took strong marks early and James Aish showed his pace on the wing with two rebound 50’s in the first few minutes.

There was as strong focus on structure and set up as the ball was reset back to the middle of the ground every time there was an out of bounds.

Nat Fyfe’s presence was hard to ignore as he combined in the middle with Adam Cerra to work the ball forward for the Pink team, though Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong were equally as good for team Purple with their clean hands and relentless pressure on the ball carrier.

Alex Pearce had the job on Taberner and took a strong contested grab early inside defensive 50.

The highlight of the quarter started in the middle, with Serong winning the centre clearance and sending a long kick inside 50, the ball spilled out of the contest and was crumbed brilliantly by Sam Switkowski who snapped truly for his first goal of the match.

Brayshaw again started the second quarter with a centre clearance, finding Taberner on the lead inside 50 though he was unable to convert.

Leno Thomas began to work his way into the game, taking a solid contested mark going back with the flight from a long kick in down the middle. The turnover eventually led to a mark and goal for the Pink team off Rory Lobb’s boot.

Joel Western showed his pace and looked dangerous inside 50, with the highlight of his game a great run-down tackle on James Aish to cause a turnover at half forward.

Pearce continued to have an impact from the backline, breaking lines through the middle of the ground to help send the ball inside 50 and create scoring opportunities.

Blake Acres lined up on the wing for the Purple team and found plenty of the ball throughout the match. His attack on the footy and ability to win it out of the contest was highlighted by his tackle on Fyfe, winning himself a holding the ball free kick.

Small forwards Mitch Crowden and Lachie Schultz both made sure to capitalize on their opportunities, earning themselves a goal each in the third quarter. Sam Switkowski also kicked his second for the match off the back of a pin-point kick from Travis Colyer in the pocket.

Brayshaw and Acres again combined to kick off the third quarter with a centre clearance, though Heath Chapman was quick to cut off the Purple attack as he flew for a nice contested grab.

As the purple attack started to heat up, Luke Ryan showed his strength in the backline cutting off anything that came his way and taking on the one-on-ones at ground level to help halve the contest for his team.

Rookie Josh Treacy continued to fly for marks and throw his body around as he took some really strong contested grabs throughout the second half. His best moment of the game came from a superb run-down tackle inside 50, earning himself a free kick and shot on goal which he converted.

The Purple team finished the match sim on top, with Brayshaw and Serong’s contested ball and clearance work in the midfield being the standout of the day.
