Forward Matt Taberner has the belief Fremantle can make their mark on the 2021 AFL season, but knows it wont be easy for him and his teammates.

The 27-year-old was one of five Fremantle players currently on the list to take part in Freo's last finals appearance in the 2015 preliminary final against Hawthorn, alongside Nat Fyfe, David Mundy, Michael Walters and Stephen Hill.

Speaking to The West Australian, Taberner said the current group had the potential to see Fremantle return to the top eight, but added the onus was on the players to get the job done.

“There’s no limits on what you can play. There’s been some young teams that have got to the top eight and gone a long way, so we don’t have any limits on what we can do this year,” Taberner told The West Australian.

“We’ve got some great people into the club at the moment — both in the football department and the playing group. I think if we stay driven and work hard, we can challenge the best teams in the AFL and hopefully go a long way.”

Taberner is currently playing out the final year of his current contract and said he was be eager to sign on.

“I’m very comfortable here and I love WA and I want to play my career out at Freo,” Taberner said.

“I’m pretty happy with how I’m going and even looking back at last year, I know I can do a lot better. There’s a lot more improvement left in me, no doubt.

“I’m happy to start the season (without an extension). I don’t feel like there’s a risk of injury or anything jeopardising that, so I’m happy to start the season and see what happens.”
