Silky-skilled Fremantle forward Michael Walters admits he wasn’t quite up to scratch in his first game back following an injury lay off.

Walters injured an ankle in the club’s draw with Sydney at the SCG in round 8 and missed three games, which meant more than a month on the sidelines given the team’s bye.

He had 12 disposals and kicked a trademark classy goal in the 38-point win over North Melbourne on Sunday.

But Walters said there was plenty of room for improvement.

“I felt the pressure was up and I was a bit heavy,” he said.

“I missed a goal that I would have kicked a couple of weeks ago.

“First game back, it was always going to be tough to get back up to the level I was at.

“Will I get a game next week? Hopefully, and hopefully I can play more like I was before the injury.”

While he wasn’t at optimum match-fitness levels, the 22-year-old still managed to kick the sort of goal Freo fans have become accustomed to him kicking in the past year.

But ever the team player, Walters credited the midfield for its efficient entry pass into the forward line.

“It was a good kick by the boys, they put it out in front and let the smalls get onto it,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to get it and bounce it through.”

Walters said the focus now turned to Geelong, which Fremantle plays under lights at Simonds Stadium off a six-day break.

“The team has to recover well, do everything to a tee,” he said.

“Make sure we get enough sleep, make sure we eat well, and just keep doing the things professional athletes do.”
