Fremantle are looking to put their unbeaten 2020 NAB AFL Women’s season behind them and focus squarely on being even better in 2021 as they commence their pre-season on Thursday evening at Victor George Kailis Oval.

Senior coach Trent Cooper said the group was excited to get stuck back into training after playing their last game in their 70-point semi-final win against the Gold Coast in March.

“Even though we’re kicking things off with a 2km time trial, they’re really pumped to be back and we’re looking forward to getting out and catching up with each other and training well,” Cooper said.

Cooper added that the team would not be leaning on their cancelled 2020 season too much for motivation.

“We can’t go in with a pent up attitude from last year,” Cooper said.

“We have to go back to the start and build. The girls are keen to extend their unbeaten streak as long as possible, but at the same time, we know that we start the season with zero points, just the same as all the other 13 teams in the competition.

“We’re going to have to re-establish ourselves early on in the season to be a contender again.”

While nothing is certain in the current environment, Cooper said there was a sense of relief amongst the group to be returning to training.

“Things look to be going really well across Australia so fingers crossed that continues,” Cooper siad.

“At this stage it’s looking good to get the season underway in that first week of February and we’ll be doing everything in our power to make sure we’re ready for that date.”
